Maelstrom

Maelstrom is an Immersive Sound Installation, placing a selection of hanging metal sheets manipulated by sound pressures transmitted from transducers. Depicted from the short story of Edgar Allan Poe’s “A Descent into the Maelstrom” this Installation replicates the unrelenting power of the ocean, an audio - physical experience focusing on reduced listening and physical engagement by exploring humans sonic perceptions and spatial sensations.

Timeless Solitude

A series of images which capture the timeless essence of an old gold mining settlement in the outback of Eastern Australia. Working parallel with and drawing inspiration from Jason Lee’s adventure through Texas titled ‘A Plain View’ - this extraordinary place would only be found if one was in search of it; with just a single stretch of dead end road in and out. As if stepping onto the set of Harmony Korine’s ‘Gummo’, this work illustrates the charm of this historic and forgotten town.

South East Asia Portraits

South East Asia Portraits is a collection of images shot during my time backpacking in 2016. Having experienced a raw insight into various walks of life from countries less developed than the western world, this work finds itself looking through the lens of both curiosity and concern. These images offer an honest reflection of the faces and places I visited, whilst expressing my broadening perspective of the world we live in. It is likely these experiences played an important part in influencing the relationship I share with photography and visual language today.

Notions of Home

Notions of Home aims to unhinge our rigid perceptions of the mundane, overlooked urban space, in an attempt to reveal an elegance and beauty amongst unexpected scenes. Matthew’s reflections into his own experiences and memories of adolescent years have led to a deeper understanding of what these spaces may facilitate for those who inhabit them for reasons beyond their banal societal functions. The journey of this work has continued to raise sensations of nostalgia, belonging and displacement, which has given birth to questions surrounding the notions of home. We find street lights abstracting the surfaces of the structures, illuminating a sculptural allurement, which intertwines with the eerie atmosphere of the night to form a subtext for the intricate and contemplative themes that his work offers.
